Tryouts for Provincial Teams

Withrow Park Ball Hockey League has a proud tradition of sending All-Star teams to the Provincial Championships every summer in every eligible division. In 2022, the WPBHL were very successful winning 8 gold medals and 5 silvers across the various ages and levels.

The 2023 championships are scheduled as follows:

June 16-18 – Girls – U10 / U12 / U15 / U18 Provincials – Trenton

July 7-9 – Co-Ed- U14 / U16 / U18 Provincials – Kitchener-Waterloo

July 14-16 – Co-Ed – U8 / U10 / U12 Provincials – Mississauga

Tryouts

The league encourages everyone interested to attend at least one of the tryout dates for your division.  This is the only guaranteed way for the coaches and convenors to ensure that all interested players are evaluated properly and fairly. There is no fee to attend tryouts. The schedule is as follows:

Coaches

The league is in the process of naming head coaches for each division. Confirmed head coaches are listed below. The remaining head coaches will be named in the weeks ahead. Head coaches will also have the discretion to name their bench staff.

Co-Ed & Girls Teams

Girls playing in the Co-Ed or Girls divisions can try out for both Co-Ed and Girls teams if they wish.

 U8 Girls

While there is no provincial championship tournament for U8 Girls, players who are interested are encouraged to attend the GU10 tryouts

Commitment

Should a player be selected for an All-Star team, the expected commitment will be one practice per week, regular attendance at house league games and the ability to compete at every game over the provincial championship weekend.  Coaches will have the discretion to make exceptions on an as-required basis for their teams.

Practices

A practice schedule will be determined and communicated by the head coach once the All-Star teams are selected and will begin in May. It is likely the practices will be on a weeknight between 6:30 and 9:30 at Withrow, Riverdale or Greenwood.

Fees

There will be no fees for attending the tryouts.

There will be a fee to play on an All-Star team that will cover practice rink rental, uniform, tournament fee and insurance.  This will be communicated once uniform costs have been determined.

Uniforms

Uniforms will include a jersey, shorts and socks. These uniforms will be kept by the players.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between A & B teams?

In some divisions there is enough interest to field two teams.  The A team is usually the highest-skilled team. The final roster construction is always left up to the coaches.

I can’t attend either tryout. Can I still get selected for an All-Star team?

If it is impossible for a player to attend a tryout, the coach may agree to evaluate the player during house league play. This will be at the head coach’s discretion

I have a friend who is really good, but doesn’t play at Withrow. Can they play on the All-Star team?

WPBHL requires players to be registered and active in the house league program to be named to a Provincial All-Star team.  Exceptions may be made for goaltenders with the approval of the WPBHL president.

If I play on a team that is successful at the provincials, does that mean I get named to the team going to the national championships next year?

Teams that finish in the top 3, earn the WPBHL the right to send a team to compete in the National Championships the following year.  However, players on successful provincial championship teams are not guaranteed roster spots by virtue of finishing in the top 3 at the provincial championships.  Teams attending the national championships will be selected the following Spring.

My player wasn’t named to a team this year. Who do I talk to about this?

The decision of the head coaches on All-Star team rosters are final.
